The emotional moments were particularly symbolic given that the Queen began most of her days with the sound of bagpipes.

As a wake-up call, the piper would play at 9 a.m. for 15 minutes for the monarch, wherever she resided.

Pipe Major Scott Methven, who held the role between 2015 and 2019, told the BBC last week that he had known the Queen very well during her tenure.

“It was a pleasure because Her Majesty was watching you play,” he told the BBC. “She loved the bagpipes, but she got to know you as a person.”
